A project for my visual narrative class that I've been collaborating with Taryn Gee & Anne Ren.

Our story follows Princess Annabelle and a wizardly centaur named Jack Hughman as they go off on an adventure to find the perfect pair of boots so Annabelle can marry the perfect prince.

I'm also hoping to put up a sketch a week of my teacher Paul, since I've already ended up drawing him twice. Yay propaganda class!

There are two windows in the downstairs powder room of my parents' house that will be covered when the new renovations are underway for the kitchen (more cabinets!!!!) So my mother requested two watercolour paintings, a sort of mother-daughter, blue, night sky theme is what she wanted.

And what she wants, she gets.

Finally working on the next stage in my logo design project- the hang tags! Here are some early roughs, and thankfully my teacher loves it all (no redo for me!).

It's the over sugary-sweetness feeling to it. It fools us all...

Those little felt sweeties were not made by me (sadness) I found them while searching 'candy' on flickr, and was tickled pink at how well they went with my cloud design

The final design for my logotype in design class, it's been a pretty cool project so far.

The logo we design is for a brand of jeans and market of our choice, my market being mothers of tots who think dressing their girls in jeans and tutus is awesome (it so is).

This version of the cloud took me forever and I'm still not convinced. At this stage I'm designing more for the hang tag and the embroidery of the design that will go on the jeans- kinda like this:

It wasn't intentional for him to come out looking like a pineapple- it just happened, and now that it has, I really like it.

He's not really done yet. The hat and bandanna still need to be 'finished' with more of that light I have going on in the painting. And the eyes. I tried experimenting with a new shape of eyes, which work with my watercolours, but not for this. Really missing my old crazy eyes in this piece, mostly because I wanted the mischief look and it's not there. He's looking but he's not mischievous.

One of a few sketches I completed for my coffee sleeve project (this one is the only one of the second round of roughs, though). The idea is to design a coffee sleeve for a coffee chain in Pearson's Terminal 1, aimed towards the mature business traveler. There are three options to go with: Red Eye, Jet Fuel and Sky Blue. I'm going with Sky Blue.

I'm currently working on a sketch for an opera poster. I've chosen the opera Norma, and have gone as far as to expand this sketch into a colour study. There are thumbnails on other variations for the poster, but I have two favorites so far. The colour study is done in photoshop, the final poster will be done in pastels, and the final size will be 18" by 26".

It's not done, but it won't be much more detailed than this.

In the end, most of the piece was worked out in photoshop in addition to pastel textures I had created for the project. It's now the solution for when I want a project to retain the feel of my traditional pastel pieces, but I don't necessarily have time to do the piece in pastels. Sure looks like she lives an unbalanced lifestyle.

I suppose 'back to school' for me means less time updating this blog. It's a bit sad, but good, because it also means I'll be focusing a lot on my school work. The last piece I had done (the Overheard / Understood project) took about a week and a half on roughs, and 2 full days of painting to get done.

Even so, to me, I still don't feel like the painting itself is done. I'll have to go back and finish it up but that will have to be later because we're already in our second slew of projects. But it will get done, I really love this painting, so for now I'll have to wrap it up and put it away somewhere safe.

Went away with my family to Goderich this weekend (just got back today) for the Celtic Root Festival. It was almost a fantastic trip, sadly this amazing clay water whistle in the shape of a goat sold before I could take him all for myself (I was trying to control my buying impulse). It was sad. The other goat whistles just didn't stand up to his amazing-ness.

Fortunately, I got some good sketches in (my favorite is the little boy, Michael, who kept staring over his Dad's shoulder at my younger brother).

My Little Bleeding Heart

Quite a while ago (at the beginning of my summer...it's been going by so fast) a branch of one of my Mum's bleeding hearts came right off. It was quite pretty (being a branch in full bloom, and all) that it was a shame to throw it out, so my Mum gave it to me (to put in a vase). We then noticed that a tiny bit of the root had come up with it. It was such a little piece of the root, we had no idea whether it would survive even if we did repot it.

We did anyways, and I took it with me to Oakville (a little bit of home for me). It survived (all the flowers withered then, of course). But these past few weeks it gives me a new bloom (every few days). Beautiful.

I had been reworking my Summer image for my new header, and then realized that both Spring and Summer had never been posted on the blog (Winter and Fall had been). Summer is one of four paintings I had done for a calender, one for each season, three months for each season and so on...

And sure enough (for me), the girl in the sassy polka dots who faces off on the beach brought tango to mind.

Later I'll post what the completed calenders looked like (the backgrounds ended up being texture masks done in illustrator).

Princesses and Cherry Tarts

I had been home for this past week- just getting back to Oakville yesterday. Worked a lot on my computer, since I don't like taking my materials back and forth (I always end up misplacing or forgetting something that I really need). But I liked what I've done with my Princess so far. Soon she'll have a story of her own, until then I have to finish the Prince (who's coming along fabulously, I must say).

It takes a long time to create images in illustrator for me. But it's great practice, and in the end I can shift through different variations with ease. Her hair is my favorite by far, and it surprised me because I had made it with the pencil tool. Her Majesty is mostly a compromise of pen, pencil and smooth tool.

A little tart full of happiness... those cherries were amazing. Locally grown from the St. Catharines area. You can't go wrong when picking cherries from a place on Cherry Avenue. That's right, real street.

I went out and bought Cupid's Cupcakes at Oakville Place (they come and set up there once a week). I got myself a "Vanilla Thrilla" and "Fred & Gingerbread". Delicious. They help me through my pastel painting, which is no good- the pictures look okay, but I really have to go out and buy more wood (it's now confirmed that working on anything else does not please me).

Berry-tastic Pie!

I did manage to find myself some blackberries, raspberries and blueberries: look out Wednesday I'm gonna make me some pie!

I made two small cards for my Aunts Nieves and Gina who will come up to visit my Mum for her birthday. My dear Mummsie's is in quite a state, maybe I'll get her a moose. I hear they're quite handy.

Aunt Gina's card is a 'sexy vamp' in a loincloth, which unfortunately I have no pictures of right now. My Aunt Nieves gets a more Mexican inspired drawing. (Gina's was inspired by Gina...)
